A Recipe for a House
Просмотров 2027 месяцев назад
In this TikTok video Glenn Mathewson uses some analogies to help you understand how the IRC is designed as a cookbook for construction, full of recipes for simple and affordable design of dwellings. Take a moment to get a different perspective of "code" from an award-winning building code educator.
Minimum sizes of kitchens in building codes
Просмотров 4638 месяцев назад
While writing my Know the Code Column in Fine Homebuilding Magazine about minimum sizes under the International Residential Code, my editor asked me why kitchens have no minimum size. This video shows how a professional building code educator researches a code question. Originally posted on BuildingCodeCollege.com TikTok account
Building Codes for Common Walls
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.8 месяцев назад
Common walls are a method of fire prevention between dwellings with a shared wall, often townhouses. The purpose of the 2021 IRC code on common walls that I’m about to teach you in this clip is to help prevent the spread of flames through the separate dwellings. This clip comes from my On-Demand Course, Chapter 3: Fire in 302!, only at BuildingCodeCollege.code. Thanks for watching!
Glazing on Windows

Your office window gives you a nice view of the trees in the park across the street when you need a moments break from work. The kitchen window lets you watch your kids and dog play in the backyard while you cook. Your bedroom window lets in the cool morning air while you enjoy a cup of coffee in bed. Windows are wonderful openings into the outdoors that we use in many different ways. Unfortuna...
Fire Separation Distance Introduction
Просмотров 7249 месяцев назад
The space allowed between our buildings and structures is referred to in certain codes as fire separation distance. We have guidelines for this distance to help prevent fires spreading between those structures and avoid the possibility of a disaster. In this clip from my On-Demand Course, Chapter 3: Fire in 302!, I'll teach you some introductory information from the 2021 IRC about fire separati...
Safety Glass in Bathrooms and Wet Surfaces
Просмотров 2519 месяцев назад
Bathrooms and slippery areas are some of the places where accidents are more likely to happen, so there are often more code regulations in place for these areas to help keep people safe. One example of this would be safety glass, or safety glazing. This video will cover everything you need to know about safety glazing in these slippery areas using clips from my On-Demand courses. For the full c...
Gypsum Protection Under Staircases
Просмотров 3479 месяцев назад
Gypsum board, commonly known as drywall, is a very important material when it comes to keeping our homes and buildings safe from fires. Gypsum board slows the burn and spread of flame, giving us time to escape, and emergency services time to put out the fire. Because of its unique ability, we want to install it in any common paths in the event of a fire, one of those being staircases. To help k...
Ladders and Stairs for Egress Window Wells
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.9 месяцев назад
Emergency escape and rescue openings are important. And unless you've got a shallow window well, or are super athletic, you're probably going to want an easy way out of your egress window well in the event of a fire. Ladders and stairs are the best options, but there are just a few rules for those in the building code. In this video, I'll teach you what the 2021 IRC outlines for ladders and sta...
Building Codes for Safety Glazing Adjacent to Doors

Safety glazing, such as tempered glass, is not only needed in the panels of doors, but next to the doors as well. This video will show you some of the clips where we go over all the 2021 IRC requirements for safety glass adjacent to doors. To learn about all the rules for safety glazing and lots more, check out my full On-Demand courses at BuildingCodeCollege.com. I teach you about safety glazi...
Fire Separation Distance: Openings and Penetrations
Просмотров 44510 месяцев назад
We often think of smoke alarms and sprinklers when we think of fire safety; things that would help alert us and protect just one building. However, there's a very large risk of fire spread between multiple homes as well. For this reason, we have building codes that give us safe fire separation distance between buildings. In this clip I'll go over the 2021 IRC codes that explain the fire separat...
Townhouses & Double walls
Просмотров 79010 месяцев назад
Townhouses are a unique kind of of dwelling, where the individual buildings are typically quite closer to each other than many other types of homes. This can increase the risk of fire spread, however we have ways in the building code to help reduce this risk and keep us all safe. One of these ways is by building double walls. In this clip, I'll teach you about the 2021 IRC codes covering the co...

Gypsum, the technical word for drywall, is a very important material when it comes to keeping our homes safe from fire. Window wells that serve emergency escape and rescue openings, or egress windows, have special code requirements so that we can get out, and rescuers can get in. Ever heard of tempered glass? There are certain areas around your home- near doors, showers, stairs, and more- where a fall is more likely to occur. It's a special type of glass designed to break into very small pieces upon impact to reduce the likelihood of injury. Tempered glass is the most commo...

Thanks for this! Question re "joist BACK span" which is confusing me At 1:05, in the "maximum cantilever" portion of Table R507.6, it refers to "joist back span" in feet, in 2' increments, from 4' up to the number that is just below the max. "allowable joist span." What is a a "joist BACK span?" It's not defined. Is that the actual ledger-to-beam distance for your joists? If so, isn't that what "joist span" already means?

I think you're reading this wrong. The 'depth' of the porch is from the building face to the center of the 'header' which is the beam opposite/parallel to the building (as stated in note 'c'. They're giving you 2 examples either 8 feet deep, or 14 feet deep. Example, if your porch is 14 feet deep (building to header), that header, with 2-2x12, can span 10' 10". wide (side to side). Nowhere does it mention a ridge beam. It is talking about the header/girder that is supporting the ridge beam.

What beams to use when the beam span is 26 foot? (building a 26 x 26 foot free standing deck, but post are only located on the edges of the deck = imagine a grid of 9 post but center post missing, as underneath deck will be used as a "garage") What adjustment could I make for this to work? inserting any extra post in the center of the garage will not work

I watched for exactly that reason. I think what he is trying to say is that a deck is not supposed to rely on the brick for any type of support. Put some additional posts a few feet from the wall, opposite the posts at the end of the deck, and essentially what you have is a free standing deck, with only a bit of it cantilevering against your brick. And just put as strong a lag bolt system attaching through the vener to the interior framing for laughs.... but its not supposed to rely on it. ;)

hi glenn, this was super informative. I'm undergoing a basement renovation and following the 2018 VA residential building code. One question I do not understand is whether fire blocking is needed in the ceiling joists of a basement? What if HVAC ducting or electrical runs down the length of a ceiling joist bay? I haven't been able to find clarity around those questions and the county inspector isn't providing direction.
